Jive
The leading provider of modern communication and collaboration solutions for business, applying powerful technology that helps employees, partners and customers work better together.
2001
  • Jive supports both external and internal communities
  • Particularly well known for internal communities
  • Strong document collaboration and search features – good for knowledge management communities
  • Numerous integrations available via API’s
  • Built-in analytics
  • Mobile support is out of the box
  • Has a good ecosystem of implementation partners, so you’re not locked into working with Jive’s own professional services group for implementations
  • Company has struggled in public trading
  • An expensive solution
  • Choice between on-premise, hosted, and cloud deployments can be confusing
  • You’ll trade price for less customisation flexibility in the cloud, multi-tenant version
  • Hosted implementations are highly customisable but yearly upgrades can be quite costly

Jive is a powerful platform. Fully customizable, you can design all kinds of landing pages, spaces, and groups. We use Jive-X, which is in the cloud and has a bit less functionality than regular Jive.

It can handle all types of content - questions, discussions, blogs, collaborative documents, and ideas. Members have the ability to mark answers as correct, mark content outdated, etc.

Great search functionality. Has all the normal bells and whistles - private messaging, follow spaces, specific topics, etc. Members can have their own blogs, collaborate on documents.

All kinds of permission levels - you can basically set custom levels across every different space or group.

Analytics are good, but no real query tool.

  • Lots of anti-spam measurements taken
  • Ability to handle LARGE migrations of content

The platform itself is very intuitive for users and for community managers.

  • Very intuitive
  • easy to set up out of the box
  • customizations are available
  • the cloud version is limiting for customizations
  • new upgrades & releases tend to come bugs

Star Rating Good features, mature platform, bit of a learning curve, and add-ons are pricey

In general, it's a great collaboration tool with nice social features, and permissioning for each space in the community is pretty fine-grained. IF you're using the on-prem product, I'd recommend using all their native add-ons, including gamification. The cloud version has some catching up to do with the on-prem product and third-party add-ons that I have used have been somewhat problematic. That said, if you buy on-prem, you're going to essentially need a person who can manage that server and do dev work for the community, so consider that expense. Jive-x allows an out of the box implementation, but it's not real pretty. It's great for documentation sharing and collaboration that's a lot better looking than SharePoint, and easier to use.

  • Good collaboration tools. Good social networking. Good search function. Fine-grained premissioning. Robust toolset. Stable and mature platform. Probably better for internal communities than external communities.
  • There's a bit of a learning curve for a new CM and the Jive community is byzantine. Permissions are so fine-grained that you can wind up spending a lot of time on permissions (KEEP IT SIMPLE!). Really maxing-out our Jive community is best with add-ons and they all cost $5-$10K. It's not cheap. Paid support is almost a must. You'll get pretty quick response, but if you don't buy that, I shudder to think what help you'll get.
