Building Successful Superuser Programs

Planning

A superuser program can be a powerful extension of your existing community. You should apply the same methodology that you would when defining your overarching strategy.

Many programs evolve naturally and have little structure and few guidelines to begin with. If your program has grown organically and is meeting all objectives, be realistic about how much structure you introduce, and how quickly. Structure is important for survival and performance but will probably mean that you suffer a degree of attrition as members make a decision around whether they want to make a more formal commitment. If you are in this position, choose a program that rewards past behavior.

Let’s dig into this a bit deeper.

Strategy

There are four key steps in developing and executing your strategy:

  1. Define the program goals and related objectives (see Strategic Community Management)
  2. Decide on your key value metrics (see How to Calculate ROI)
  3. Define the project health and set appropriate goals and KPIs
  4. Set regular check-ins to revise and refine your strategy and tactics

Summary

  1. Superuser or ambassador programs are extensions of your existing community efforts.
  2. Proper strategizing is key to success.
  3. Start by defining one key objective first.
  4. Other objectives can be considered as the program scales.
