I got mine by good luck! I've worked in a related field for the past couple of years, but not in anything community or social media related. I did have that sort of experience from some personal projects (a website with 7000 members which I ran for 4 years) - so I had a good combination of the skills & knowledge needed for the site I work on. I hadn't even considered looking for a community manager type role when I was job searching but after being contacted about it, realised it was exactly what I wanted to be doing. So, yes, I got it much more by good luck than anything else!

I got my job by being active in a related community, Couchsurfing.
My boss asked this community, which is similar, to apply to this new "community manager" job. I had no idea what I was getting into.
